The Sacrifice of Jesus Christ
It is heredity, much the same way your height, eye color, skin
color, or hair color have been written into your DNA by the
combination of your parents DNA, the taint of sin has been written
on your soul by the first betrayal of God by your ultimate parents.
Adam and Eve walked with God in the garden - in the perfect paradise
God created - and there was only one rule.
And the Lord God commanded the man, saying "Of every tree of the
garden you may freely eat; but of the tree of the knowledge of good
and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you
shall surely die.
Genesis 2:16-17
It is the willful breaking of this first rule - the Original sin as
it has been called - that separated humankind from God. For,
while it is possible to have an interesting discussion around the
idea that God laid this rule down before Eve was created and thus
she wasn't truly to blame or that Adam was tricked by his perfectly
attractive and naked wife and thus cannot be held responsible, the
Original Sin not only includes the breaking of the rule, but the
fact that both Adam and then Eve lied to God by blaming another for
their actions. One can only wonder what would have happened
had they confessed freely their guilt, but they did not and thus all
of their descendants are tainted by this sin.
Isaiah sums up the problem plainly:
Your wrongheaded lives caused the split between you and God. Your sins got between you so that He doesn't hear. Isaiah 59:2 (The Message) It’s your sins that have cut you off from God. Because of your sins, He has turned away and will not listen anymore. Isaiah 59:2 (New Living Translation) This brings us to our problem; we are separated from God by our sin and the wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23). For God to be able to have a relationship with us again - as He did in the garden with Adam and Eve - this separation had to be overcome and the price of death had to be paid. So, the Father sent the Son. By dying on the cross as a mortal who had committed no sin, Jesus was able to take your place and pay for your sin through the crucifixion. Being the substitution for each of us - for every person who will ever live from that moment on - Jesus bore the weight of sin for the world. The Bible records the culmination of when the sum total of the sin was laid on Jesus; for in Matthew 27:46 Jesus cries out in a loud voice, saying "Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?" that is "My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?". Once Jesus bore the sin for us God the Father could no longer be in fellowship with Him and He turned away from His Son. Jesus paid the price so you could have a relationship with God. This means that you DO NOT have to clean yourself up to come to God - in fact there is absolutely nothing to do for you to have a personal relationship with God except to accept that Jesus died for you...
We are made right with God by placing our faith in Jesus Christ. And
this is true for everyone who believes, no matter who we are. For
everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.
Yet God, with undeserved kindness, declares that we are righteous.
He did this through Christ Jesus when He freed us from the penalty
for our sins. For God presented Jesus as the sacrifice for
sin. People are made right with God when they believe that Jesus
sacrificed his life, shedding His blood. This sacrifice shows that
God was being fair when He held back and did not punish those who
sinned in times past, for He was looking ahead and including them in
what He would do in this present time. God did this to demonstrate
His righteousness, for He Himself is fair and just, and He declares
sinners to be right in His sight when they believe in Jesus.
Romans 3:22-26 (New Living Translation) Religions tell you what you must do. Jesus Christ tells you He has already done it, just accept Him. |
